这幅 1860 年的绘画描绘了一位持有 iPhone 的时间旅行者吗?

Contemporary interpretation is largely responsible for giving old paintings new relevance and life, but this one really took the cake: A 19th-century painting that made modern-day viewers do a double-take.

“The Expected One,” painted by Austrian artist Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller in 1860, shows a young woman looking down at an unidentified item in her hands as she walks along a path in the countryside, seemingly oblivious to her surroundings. Internet users claimed that the small, rectangular object she was holding was actually an iPhone, arguing that this 19th century painting showed time travel.

Indeed, the picture looks eerily like a woman who is lost in her cell phone screen. A doctored version of the painting exists on Pinterest, which shows the girl’s face illuminated by the glow of the iPhone screen.

But this claim was soon debunked by art experts who said the purported cell phone was in fact a prayer book. In an interview with Vice, Gerald Weinpolter, CEO of the Art Agency Gerald Weinpolter GmbH, said: “The girl in this Waldmüller painting is not playing with her new iPhone X, but is off to church holding a little prayer book in her hands.”

That certainly is a more logical explanation than time travel. As such, we rate this claim as “False.”

Husband, father, and “Jeopardy” game show host Alex Trebek died on Nov. 8, 2020, following his battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Less than two weeks following his death, at least one advertising network had begun running ads with the headline: “Alex Trebek’s Net Worth Left His Family In Tears.” This was false.

The ads were sponsored by LifeExact, The Financial Mag, Travel Patriot, and perhaps others, and were routed through Zemanta, which is owned by Outbrain. Crunchbase defined Outbrain as “a content discovery platform providing publishers a service for recommended links to increase traffic and generate revenue.” Outbrain (via Zemanta) provided the technology that allowed the Trebek ads to appear, while LifeExact, The Financial Mag, and Travel Patriot hosted the landing pages. The landing pages featured an image slideshow, with one celebrity name and net worth figure per page. The slideshow story was headlined as: “52 Celebrities & Their Huge Net Worth – Chadwick Boseman’s Net Worth Left Us in Disbelief.”

The “net worth left family in tears” advertising lure has also been used by advertising networks exploiting the names of Kenny Rogers, Sean Connery, and Pat Sajak. However, Sajak is still alive, and as of this writing is on the first page of the “52 Celebrities” slideshow.

While the headline claimed the story was about 52 celebrities, including Chadwick Boseman, who died on Aug. 28, 2020, Boseman did not show up until after 140 clicks, on slide 140. Trebek appeared after 141 clicks, on slide 141. His page was the end of the slideshow. Trebek’s page did not appear to acknowledge his cancer or passing. The page, which claimed his net worth was $50 million, was likely created in the past, and may have been moved along with Boseman’s page to the end of the 141-page slideshow after their deaths.

The one-item-per-click slideshow model is known in the online advertising world as “arbitrage.” On the business and technology blog Margins, run by Ranjan Roy and Can Duruk, Roy defined arbitrage as “leveraging an inefficient set of systems to make a riskless profit, usually by buying and selling the same asset.” He also called it “the mythical free lunch that economics tells us does not exist.”

In arbitrage, the advertising network’s goal is to make more money on the ads displayed to readers who click through the slideshow than it costs to advertise the false “net worth left his family in tears” claim that lured them to it.

As the family grieved Trebek’s passing, on Nov. 11, his wife, Jean, shared a heartfelt message with a photograph from their wedding day. She posted to Instagram:

My family and I sincerely thank you all for your compassionate messages and generosity. Your expressions have truly touched our hearts. Thank you so very, very much.

Many Blessings to all,
Jean Trebek

揭穿模因:吸烟与 COVID-19

无论对象是吸烟还是 COVID-19,保持社交距离都是关键。

【原文】

As governments fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Snopes is fighting an “infodemic” of rumors and misinformation, and you can help. Read our coronavirus fact checks. Submit any questionable rumors and “advice” you encounter. Become a Founding Member to help us hire more fact-checkers. And, please, follow the CDC or WHO for guidance on protecting your community from the disease.

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 resulted not only in mortal harm to many Americans (tallying 248,000 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. as of this writing), it also engendered political strife over regulations imposed at state and local levels to help check the outbreak — most notably mandates requiring the wearing of masks, which many citizens objected to as an infringement of their personal freedoms.

A popular anti-mask meme compared COVID with smoking and questioned why, if the government had never forced anyone to give up the harmful activity of cigarette smoking in order to save lives, it nonetheless was compelling people to don face coverings for the same ostensible reason:

The comparison offered in this meme was logically flawed, however.

Cigarette smoking undeniably poses substantial health risks: not just to smokers themselves, but also to others around them due to the effects of secondhand smoke, exposure to which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates contributes to approximately 41,000 deaths per year. That’s why over the last several decades, governments — even if they have not absolutely banned smoking — have regulated where people may smoke. Many countries have enacted laws restricting smoking in most enclosed public spaces (such as stores, restaurants, schools, and airports) and in areas surrounding those spaces, while leaving smokers free to puff away in places where their secondhand smoke will not adversely affect others (such as in their homes, in their automobiles, and in outdoor areas away from other people).

Likewise, COVID-19 — because it is contagious — not only poses serious health risks to those who have been infected by the coronavirus, but also to others who may contract it through exposure to them. Hence, the advent of mask wearing regulations intended to help prevent infected persons from spreading the disease to others.

But, just as smoking is not absolutely prohibited by the government, neither has going mask-free been absolutely prohibited by the government. Mask mandates require citizens to wear face coverings while in public spaces, but not in the privacy of their households, vehicles, or outdoor areas where proper social distancing is maintained.

So, contrary to the conceit of the meme displayed above, regulations regarding smoking and COVID-19 are quite similar: They both aim to save lives by minimizing potentially harmful exposures in public spaces, while allowing citizens the liberty to act as they choose in private and when they are sufficiently distanced so as not to harm others. In either case, social distancing is key.

蝙蝠侠和独角兽:原来的月球恶作剧

《大月恶作剧》指的是 1835 年《纽约太阳报》标题为 “伟大天文发现” 的六篇文章。

In 16th-century Britain a common saying to describe hoaxing someone was “to make one believe the Moon is made of green cheese”. Absurd, of course. So perhaps people were more credulous by the middle of the 19th century, when a newspaper editor perpetrated what became known as the Great Moon Hoax, persuading gullible readers that on the Moon you could find unicorns and other fantastic beasts.

The Great Moon Hoax refers to six articles in the New York Sun headlined “Great Astronomical Discoveries” and allegedly reprinted from The Edinburgh Journal of Science. Beginning on August 25 1835, they revealed a lunar ecology and civilisation. The hoax tested the parameters of media credibility and “fake news” in the pre-telegraphic age. The stories circulated to other papers around the world.

Though not destroying Dick’s reputation, the hoax challenged his prioritisation of belief over evidence, foreshadowing the fundamental intellectual crises of the mid-Victorian age. Nevertheless, Dick continued to popularise science and democratise access to astronomy. Dundee’s unique public observatory is a bequest from one of Dick’s devotees, John Mills.

Whether or not Dick’s speculations constituted science fiction, they inadvertently midwifed the modern genre through Locke’s parodies. The editor and owner of the New York Herald, James Gordon Bennett, credited Locke with inventing what he called “A New Species of Writing” – “the scientific novel”.

The Dundee Moon Hoax certainly inspired the “lost Scottish father” of American sci-fi, Robert Duncan Milne who grew up in nearby Cupar in the 1840s. His own tales of astronomical discovery bear many similarities to Locke’s lunar utopia. It provided a rich context which shaped Milne’s imagination, driven by creative tensions between scientific secularism, fantastic new technologies and orthodox beliefs. The Conversation

如果服务犬在没有主人的情况下接近,他们需要帮助吗?

Some service dogs are specially trained to seek out help if their owner is suffering from a debilitating medical emergency and are in need of assistance, according to a claim made on social media that Snopes readers asked our team to verify.

We rate this claim as mostly true. While some service dogs may go through special training that teaches them to seek help if their owner is experiencing a medical emergency, not all service dogs will have been taught such discipline.

The “Service Dog PSA” was originally shared on the social media platform Tumblr by user lumpatronics on June 12, 2018, by a user who identified as Tessa Connaughton. The woman described falling down, and her dog going off to seek help. Although the fall was “awful but ultimately harmless,” the original poster went on to say that she had epilepsy, and that her service dog was trained to find help if she was having a seizure.

“If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help,” she wrote.

Service dogs are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ defines a service dog as one that has been “trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.” This includes a dog that is trained to detect the onset of a seizure and then help the person remain safe during the seizure for an owner with epilepsy.

But it is important to note that not all service dogs have been trained to find help when needed.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), that skill is found in a handful of specially trained service dogs, including those known as “seizure response” dogs trained to perform various behaviors in response to both epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. assist people who suffer from epileptic and non-epileptic seizures.

Seizure response dogs are trained to bark and alert when their owner is experiencing a seizure. These animals may also lie next to their owners during a seizure to prevent injury while others may stand nearby to break a fall and prevent injury. Such dogs can also be trained to press alarm buttons or devices that call for help, and open and close doors, and find someone to help.

It is important to note that seizure response dogs are not the same as seizure alert dogs, which some people claim can predict when a seizure is coming. Paws with a Cause, a nonprofit organization that trains and provides seizure alert dogs, noted that this behavior may develop between a dog and a human as their relationship bonds, but it is not consistent or scientifically proven — though there is some evidence that dogs with particular personality traits may be more likely to alert someone when a seizure may occur.

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

In November 2020, Snopes readers asked us to examine the accuracy of claims that “more than one million” people had taken part in a demonstration in support of U.S. President Donald Trump, who disputed the result of that year’s presidential election a week after Democratic candidate Joe Biden was declared the winner.

The event, on Nov. 14, was billed variously as the “Million MAGA March,” the “March for Trump” and “Stop the Steal DC”, inspired by unfounded or false allegations and conspiracy theories that electoral fraud had played a telling part in President-elect Biden’s victory.

That morning, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted out screenshots from live Fox News coverage of the event, adding “AMAZING! More than one MILLION marchers for President @realDonaldTrump descend on the swamp in support.”

Similarly, on Feb. 15, 2003, the Metropolitan Police estimated that around 750,000 people gathered in London’s Hyde Park to protest against the then-impending U.S. and U.K.-led military intervention in Iraq. Photographs and video footage of Hyde Park, captured on that day, show significantly larger and more densely packed crowds than those seen on Pennsylvania Avenue during the pro-Trump march, 17 years later:

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

In November 2020, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign team filed lawsuits alleging voter fraud to contest the results of the 2020 election — many of which were quickly dismissed — the president’s supporters circulated their own unsubstantiated rumors on social media. One such rumor involved a picture they claimed showed Dallas Jones (some versions labeled Jones as President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign director, and others as just a staffer) being arrested for voter fraud:

The man pictured here is not Biden’s campaign director, a Biden staffer, or a man named Dallas Jones. This is actually a photograph of actor Cuba Gooding Jr. after he was arrested in June 2019 for allegedly groping a woman at a New York City bar.

A video of Gooding’s arrest from The Associated Press can be viewed below:

Gooding has plead not guilty to this and to several additional charges related to sexual assault. As of this writing, the case is still ongoing.

While the viral photo does not show Biden’s campaign director, a staffer, or a man named Dallas Jones being arrested for voter fraud, this claim wasn’t completely conjured out of thin air.

In September 2020, conservative activist Dr. Steve Hotze, as well as other Republican officials, filed a petition with the Texas Supreme Court in an attempt to halt early voting. That petition included accusations from two private investigators that local Democrats, including Dallas Jones, the Texas political director for Biden’s campaign, had engaged in ballot harvesting. We took a deeper look into these claims in this article, and found that the allegations were not supported by much evidence.

Harris County Clerk Christopher Hollins said: “I have no knowledge of any alleged scheme, and Hotze’s filing presents no evidence. The claims are irresponsible and unfounded.”

You can read more about the allegations against Jones here. For the purposes of this article, it bears repeating that Jones has not been arrested for voter fraud.

In mid-November 2020, following on the heels of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory, a number of news outlets ran stories reporting that the charity founded by Biden and his wife, Jill, the Biden Cancer Initiative, which suspended its operation in 2019, spent “millions” on salaries but nothing on cancer research.

For example, the Russian state-funded propaganda outlet RT’s headline read, “Biden’s cancer charity raked in millions but spent NOTHING on medical research, tax filings show.” Fox Business ran with a headline declaring, “Tax filings reveal Biden cancer charity spent millions on salaries, zero on research.”

The British tabloid Daily Mail had its own version of the same story, as did the New York Post, and the Post’s story was tweeted by U.S. President Donald Trump to his nearly 89 million followers.

These stories are misleading because they give the appearance of malfeasance by falsely framing certain facts, namely the organization’s mission. The Biden Cancer Initiative wasn’t a research grant-giving organization, which is why it didn’t grant funds toward cancer research. This information is readily available on the charity’s website.

Under the “Frequently Asked Questions” section of the organizations website, you can find the query, “Is the Biden Cancer Initiative a grant-giving organization?”

The answer?

“No. The Biden Cancer Initiative will largely not be a grant-giving organization and will accomplish its mission through convening, connecting partners, catalyzing new actions, and providing venues to discuss progress and develop new actions and collaborations.”

“The Biden Cancer Initiative never intended to make research grants because we had a $2.5 million budget which was dedicated to creating collaborations among companies, universities, nonprofits, patient groups, researchers, and the government,” said Greg Simon, former president of the charity.

The mission “was to work with patients from the bottom up to make things change,” Simon said, adding that the organization created collaborations that helped cancer patients with things like accessing care, financial support, and community support. According to its website, the 501(c)3 charity brought together dozens of groups and organizations to leverage resources connecting patients to clinical trials, cancer prevention and early detection, and data sharing, for example.

As The Associated Press reported in 2019, the charity “promoted nearly 60 partnerships with drug companies, health care firms, charities and other organizations that pledged more than $400 million to improve cancer treatment.”

The Bidens founded the charity in 2017, two years after their son, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer at the age of 46. But the charity suspended its operations in 2019. Joe and Jill Biden left the organization in April 2019 when he launched his run for the presidency, and the organization closed shortly after, with news reports citing a lack of momentum without its namesake founders.

According to the nonprofit’s tax filings, which are publicly available using the charity tracking tool Guidestar, it paid just over $3 million in employee compensation during the time it was running. Simon told us that salaries at the charity were set by a compensation committee that used “comparables to other nonprofits” to set compensation rates.

The Biden Cancer Initiative was the philanthropic extension of the White House “Cancer Moonshot” program, an effort by the Obama administration “to dramatically accelerate efforts to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer —  to achieve a decade’s worth of progress in five years,” per the Biden Cancer Initiative website. As vice president, Biden headed up that effort.

UPDATE: The Associated Press reported on Nov. 17 that a second Georgia county had also found votes that had not yet been counted. However, it was not expected to change the outcome of the election.

On Nov. 16, 2020, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) published a breaking news story that detailed how 2,600 votes in Georgia were not yet counted in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

“It’s very concerning,” Luke Martin, chairman of the Floyd County Republican Party, told the AJC. “But this doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue. I’m glad the audit revealed it, and it’s important that all votes are counted.”

The votes were found during a state audit due to be finalized on Nov. 20. The Associated Press reported that “the post-election audit is being held under a new state law that required one to be conducted for the first time this year on a race of the secretary of state’s choosing.” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said that the presidential election was chosen because of the “national significance of this race and the closeness of this race.”

On Nov. 17, Heather Mullins from Real America’s Voice (RAV-TV) posted a video and tweeted: “Floyd County, GA: Officials look for a box with 10 more batches after they thought they were done rescanning…updates to come.” President Donald Trump tweeted about the video on the following day:

FLOYD COUNTY, GEORGIA! pic.twitter.com/mIZ5rmdkvw

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 18, 2020

Despite numerous debunked conspiracy theories about companies with names like Dominion Voting Systems, and purported operations like “Hammer” and “Scorecard,” the issue in Floyd County appeared to come down not to a software problem, but to human error:

The problem occurred because county election officials didn’t upload votes from a memory card in an ballot scanning machine, said Gabriel Sterling, the state’s voting system manager.

He called it “an amazing blunder” and said the county’s elections director should resign.

“It’s not an equipment issue. It’s a person not executing their job properly,” Sterling said. This is the kind of situation that requires a change at the top of their management side.”

The previously uncounted votes were cast during in-person early voting at the Floyd County Administration Building, which includes the county’s elections office, said Luke Martin, chairman of the Floyd County Republican Party.

The AJC also reported that the issue took place on a machine that failed during early voting, and that “county election officials were supposed to rescan all paper ballots cast on that machine, but roughly half of them weren’t recorded.”

Raffensperger said that “other counties’ recounted figures closely match their original numbers,” meaning that, thus far, this was the most significant issue found by the state in its audit.

People are increasingly aware of the harm plastic waste causes to wildlife, and many would avoid buying single-use plastics if they could help it. But are the alternatives to plastic much better?

Let’s look at one example – fizzy drinks. You might assume that plastic bottles are the least green option, but is that always the case?

First place: recycled aluminium cans

Recycled aluminium cans were the least environmentally damaging single-use container we looked at. Aluminium can be constantly recycled with no change in properties. Recycling an aluminium can saves 95% of the energy used to make a new can and no new material needs to be mined or transported.

But aluminium isn’t always recycled. The UK’s recycling rate for aluminium packaging is just 52%. This must be drastically improved to make recycling the main supply of new cans.

Even if some of these containers are better than others, all of them have an environmental impact. The best option would be to phase out single-use packaging entirely, and introduce a system of reusing containers. Think self-serve drinks machines in local shops, where you could fill a bottle that you bring from home, or bottle return and reuse schemes.

Reducing waste and reusing materials, where possible, should come before recycling something. By reusing bottles, we reduce the amount of single-use packaging that needs to be created, reducing waste and a whole host of global environmental problems. The Conversation

On 7 September 2016 the web site Associated Media Coverage published an article reporting that, in order to promote diversity, Facebook had issued a ban the posting of on all Christian-themed content on their social network while imposing no such restriction on content involving any other religion:

Representatives from Facebook, the social media giant known for making overnight changes in policy have announced their newest policy update, which is being viewed as one of the company’s most controversial changes to date.

According to Facebook representative Riker Jepson, the company’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has made the decision to ban all Christian themed content in attempt to celebrate religious diversity while at the same time reducing religious intolerance among the social network’s estimated 1.65 billion monthly active users.

According to Jepson, one of the most frequent complaints made by Facebook users each month is what many of the website’s members describe as religious intolerance or bullying by the social network’s Christian population. Many Facebook users have complained that the website has become “over-saturated” with Christian posts, groups, pages, meme’s, and even Christian themed hashtags.

According to Jepson, the company’s developers are currently working to create an algorithm that will alert staff of any content that appears to be related to Christianity. All flagged content will be reviewed by a dedicated team and will be immediately removed if found to be in violation of community standards. According to Jepson, repeated offenders will have their credentials suspended and will no longer have access to their Facebook accounts. Though Jepson estimates their developers will have mastered the necessary algorithm within the next few weeks, the company is giving users until November 15, 2016, to ensure compliance with the newest policy update.

Though Facebook will be void of all Christian related content, not all religious themed content will be banned. Several religions will still have free-reign on the social network including but not limited to, Buddhism, Deity, Druid, Eckankar, Ethical Culture, Hindu, Humanist, Jewish, Mormonism, Muslim, Native American Spirituality, New Age, Pagan, Rastafarian, Santeria, Scientologist, Secular, Sikh, Spiritualist, Taoist, and Unitarian Universalist.

The report was a riff on a years-old, perpetually false hoax claim that Facebook is banning content related to Christianity (such as Nativity scenes). Not only is that rumor both old and long-debunked, but the source of this most recent version (Associated Media Coverage) is a fake news site that typically spreads falsehoods regarding to non-existent laws or statutes which would affect a specific subset of the population. The Christian-themed Facebook content ban is just another a variation on that theme.

Previous fabrications from the site included claims of an impending motorcycle curfew in March 2016, a motorcycle speed ban in August 2016, a FDA e-juice ban in mid-2016, and a heartstring-tugging fib about several jurisdictions codifying a “two pet maximum” ordinance (intimating many households would be forced to rehome beloved pets).  Associated Media Coverage expanded its scope into darker fake news items alongside claims like the Christian-themed content ban, promulgating upsetting falsehoods about a transgender bathroom controversy-related shooting death (during a time of nationwide interest in the issue), Casey Anthony opening a home daycare center, and a dead baby located in a Walmart DVD bin.

Although many fake news sites include disclaimers informing readers their content is fabricated, Associated Media Coverage does not.

On Nov. 8, 2020, an unknown Twitter account tweeted that Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers had filed for bankruptcy. Raising Cane’s is a fast-food chain headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The tweet, which appeared to have been deleted, read: “BREAKING : Raising Canes, 24-Year-Old Fast Food Chain, Files for Bankruptcy. Developing Story.” It was shared hours later as a screenshot in a TikTok video posted by Tyrone Riley:

However, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers did not file for bankruptcy. In fact, a new location opened in Baldwin Park, California, six days prior to the viral tweet being published. The company also recently announced plans to open a third location in Tempe, Arizona.

Further, in an April 2020 QSR interview with Raising Cane’s founder and Co-CEO Todd Graves, Graves said the chain was even able to avoid furloughs and layoffs at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite a tough time for many businesses:

It was tough at first, Graves acknowledges. At one point, sales were down as much as 30 percent.

“That’s scary,” Graves says. “Thank God it was only 30 percent. We make small margins on very large volumes.”

Raising Cane’s adjusted its marketing and contacted media outlets to let customers know that restaurants are still able to serve food with enhanced safety measures. The message was heard, and customers began to return as units perfected the shift to drive-thru while maintaining quality.

Sales changed to 25 percent. Then to 20 percent and to 15 percent, and so on. Now, Graves is proud to note that in the past couple of days, Raising Cane’s returned to pre-COVID-19 sales numbers.

In sum, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers did not file for bankruptcy, nor has it showed signs that it had been harshly impacted by the pandemic. The original tweet that started the rumor appeared to have been deleted, but a week later a TikTok video continued to spread its false message.

A secretly taped conversation from July 2018 between Melania Trump and former top aide Stephanie Winston Wolkoff recorded several profanity-laced comments made by the first lady, including: “Who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff and decoration?”

The audio first aired on Oct. 1, 2020, on the CNN primetime program “Anderson Cooper 360.” Cooper referred to Wolkoff as her “former best friend,” and The New York Times identified Wolkoff as being a “close confidant.” The portion about Christmas runs from 4:35-6:03 in this video:

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

Melania Trump: They say I’m complicit, I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough. I don’t do enough.

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff: Nope. It’s, it —

Trump: Where I am. I put — I’m working like a ass — my ass off at Christmas stuff that, you know, who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff and decoration, but I need to do it right?

Wolkoff: Yeah, but —

Trump: Correct?

Wolkoff: 100%, you had no choice.

Trump: And OK. And then I do it. And I said I’m working on Christmas planning for the Christmas. And they said, oh, what about the children, that they were separated. Give me a fucking break. Where they were saying anything when Obama did that?

Wolkoff: I know.

Trump: I cannot go. I was trying to get the kid reunited with the mom, I didn’t have a chance, needs to go through the process and through the law.

Wolkoff: But here’s my thing, hear what you just said, but instead of that, if — you just — your messaging. You were so loved. You were.

Trump: They will not do the story. We put it out. They would not do the story.

Wolkoff: Until —

Trump: You would not believe it. They would not do the story. Because they are not — they would not do the story because they are against us because they’re liberal media. Yeah, if I go to Fox, they will do the story, I don’t want to go to Fox.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

It is true that the first lady said the words: “Who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff and decoration?” The quote appeared to be in the context of Melania Trump having wished she could concentrate on more important duties, including purportedly wishing to reunite a mother and child that may have been separated at the U.S.-Mexico border. At the time, the Trump administration was under scrutiny for its practice of separating families at that border with no clear plan for reuniting them. (More than two years later in October 2020, hundreds of such children had still not been reunited with their parents.)

Wolkoff’s audio recordings featured more of the first lady talking about her June 21, 2018, visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, in which she received quite a bit of press for a jacket she wore that read: “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” Running from 2:44-4:34 in the same video from “Anderson Cooper 360,” Trump mentioned her visit to see the children who came to America:

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

Trump: All these kids that I met, they were — they are here in the shelters because they were brought by it from through coyotes. The people who were trafficking. And that’s why they put them in jail and the kids that they go in shelters and the way they take care of them. It’s, you know, they even said the kids, they say, wow, I will have my own bed, I will sleep on the bed, I will have a cabinet for my clothes. It’s so sad to hear it, but they have it. They didn’t have that in their own countries.

WOLKOFF: Right?

Trump: They sleep on the floor. They are, you know —

Wolkoff: There’s nothing.

Trump: — they are taking care nicely there. But, you know, yeah, they are not its parents, it’s sad. But you when they come here alone, or with coyotes, or illegally, you know, you need to, you need to do something.

Wolkoff: Right.

Trump: And a lot of, you know, a lot of like moms and kids, they are teaching how to do it, they go over and they say like, oh, we will be killed by a gang member, we will be the — you know, we will be it’s — so dangerous. So they allow to stay here. Do you understand what I mean?

Wolkoff: I do. And they’re the ones that are the bad ones.

Trump: Yes, and they are not, you know, it’s not true, that they would, you know, what, I mean, some of them, they using that lines that, you know, they’re not professional, but they are, they are teached by other people what to say, to come over and to, you know, to let them go to stay here. Because, you know, they could easily stay in Mexico, but they don’t want to stay in Mexico because Mexico doesn’t take care of them the same as America does.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

NEW YORK, NY – (L-R) David Wolkoff, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Melania Trump and Donald Trump attend GUCCI and MADONNA host A NIGHT TO BENEFIT RAISING MALAWI AND UNICEF at the United Nations on February 6, 2008 in New York City. (Photo by BILLY FARRELL/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images)

Melania Trump’s reference to the idea that former President Barack Obama had a family separation policy is misleading, however. Family separation was not a federal requirement prior to the Trump administration. The Obama administration built cages that have housed children who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. However, photographs of the cages from his time in office depicted unaccompanied minors who crossed the border without parents or guardians, which is different from children being separated from their families by the United States government.

Another claim that surfaced in 2020 about first lady Melania Trump and Christmas is that she purportedly said “2020 marks the final holiday season for the Trump White House.” This was false, however, as the website that promoted the misleading quote was not an official government website.

Melania Trump’s recorded conversation added a new chapter to what has been long referred to as “The War on Christmas,” which has quite a long history.

On Nov. 12, 2020, photographs supposedly showing a “dinosaur-sized” alligator ambling across a golf course in Florida went viral on social media:

These are genuine images.

They were captured at the Valencia Golf and Country Club in Naples, Florida. Tyler Stolting, an employee at the club, captured a video of this large alligator that was later shared to the golf club’s Facebook page:

Stolting told the Tampa Bay Times that he spotted the gator while driving by the club’s 17th tee. While alligators are occasionally spotted at the Valencia Golf and Country Club, Stolting said that he has never seen one this big:

“Yep, it’s real … Once I got closer it definitely was a shock.”

Interestingly, this is not the first time that the internet has been shocked to the point of disbelief in reaction to photographs of large alligators on golf courses. In 2016, a similarly sized alligator was met with skepticism after being spotted at the Buffalo Creek Golf Club in Palmetto, Florida.

However, it was not true that the rapper had passed away. Twitter pinned a message at the top of the #RIPDrake trend informing viewers that it was a death hoax: “No, Drake is not dead. The rumors arose after users began to share photoshopped images of articles saying the rapper had died”:

Some tweets shared screenshots of reports supposedly taken from TMZ and Genius. The fake TMZ headline read “Drake dead at 34 after a drive-by shooting.” The fake Genius headline, which may have been shared more widely, read: “Drake’s Family Releases Info Saying Drake Passed Away.” A number of tweets spread the rumor, while others reacted after finding out it was not true:

On Nov. 14, 2020, supporters of President Donald Trump rallied in Washington D.C., in an event dubbed the “Million MAGA March,” either to commiserate with each other about Trump’s recent loss in his failed bid for re-election, or to foster Trump’s spurious claims that the presidential election had been “stolen” from him.

Some posts shared on social media about the event purported to document the display of Nazi and Confederate flags offered for sale at the rally:

However, the photograph seen above was taken in a different time and place that had no connection to “Million MAGA March.” It had been snapped at the Braddock’s Inn flea market in Pennsylvania over two months earlier, and the vendor displaying the offending material removed it upon request:

亿万富翁乔治·索罗斯自己的帕勒吗?

多年来,这位慈善家被错误地指控为一些项目提供资金。

【宣称】

亿万富翁乔治·索罗斯拥有保守的社交网络 Parler。

【结论】

虚假

【原文】

In November 2020, a rumor started to circulate on social media that George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist frequently featured in right-wing conspiracy theories, was the owner of the new social media site Parler. The rumor was based largely on a supposed screenshot from a Fox News broadcast bearing the words “Fox News Confirms: George Soros is a Majority Owner of New Social Platform Parler.”

This is not a genuine screenshot from Fox News, and Soros does not own Parler. The chyron displayed here is fake.

A few immediate red flags signal that this image was doctored.

For one, no articles exist on FoxNews.com (or any other news outlet) reporting that Soros is an owner of Parler. The website is actually owned by John Matze and a few investors (none of whom are Soros). Also, why would reporter John Roberts be reporting about Parler from the White House lawn?

Robert’s position on the White House lawn made more sense when we found the source of this doctored image. The fake image about Soros was created from a screenshot of a Fox News broadcast on Nov 10, 2020, that showed reporters Sandra Smith and Roberts discussing U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to contest the results of the 2020 election. The chyron during this segment actually read: “Trump Campaign Files Lawsuit Alleging Two-Tiered Voting System in Pennsylvania.”

Parler’s CEO also disputed this rumor, writing that “Parler has NOT been sold” and that “George Soros has absolutely no association in any capacity with parler.”

Matze wrote:

Hi Everyone, can you believe how desperate the trolls are getting falsely claiming Parler is own by Soros? Not even creative haha. Minus 10 points for lack of creativity. 👎

Ive seen the image circulating. It appears photoshopped. I highly doubt Fox News would report something like this. Always be skeptical and check with us if you hear rumors. I will transparently answer any questions you all have as best as possible.

George Soros has absolutely no association in any capacity with parler. I’ve echo’d my previous Parley about the ownership structure. #transparency

The ownership structure of Parler is myself, a small group of close friends and employees. Additionally, Parler has 2 strategic investors. Dan Bongino & Jeffrey Wernick.

Parler has NOT been sold. These are malicious lies intended to damage and malign the brand of Parler. Anyone claiming otherwise is a hoaxer and most likely acting from malice. This is the length enemies of free speech will go to try to take down the ONLY platform that protects your speech, privacy and data. Parler.

Dan Bogino, one of Parler’s investors, also disputed the rumor on Twitter.

It should be noted that this is far from the first time that Soros has been falsely accused of owning or funding a project. This rumor is a bit unusual, however, as the billionaire is typically falsely accused of funding organizations painted as left leaning, such as the Black Lives Matter movement, Antifa, protesters, and any and all Democratic politicians. Bad-faith rumors have also been spread falsely claiming that Soros owned Snopes.

Dominion 投票系统删除了 2.7 万个特朗普选票吗?

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

The internet was flooded with false claims about voter fraud in the days following the 2020 U.S. presidential election on Nov. 3, 2020. Many of these rumors centered around a piece of software from Dominion Voting Systems. We’ve addressed a few of these rumors in a previous article, but the most prevalent claim, and one that was spread by U.S. President Donald Trump himself on Nov. 12, 2020, was that Dominion software had deleted 2.7 million votes that had been cast for the incumbent:

There is no truth to this claim.

On Nov. 12, 2020, a coalition of federal and state officials, including members of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), released a statement calling the 2020 election the “most secure in American history.” The statement went on to specifically address Trump’s false claim about votes being deleted, writing that “there is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.”

Here is the statement in full:

The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history. Right now, across the country, election officials are reviewing and double checking the entire election process prior to finalizing the result.

When states have close elections, many will recount ballots. All of the states with close results in the 2020 presidential race have paper records of each vote, allowing the ability to go back and count each ballot if necessary. This is an added benefit for security and resilience. This process allows for the identification and correction of any mistakes or errors. There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.

Other security measures like pre-election testing, state certification of voting equipment, and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s (EAC) certification of voting equipment help to build additional confidence in the voting systems used in 2020.

While we know there are many unfounded claims and opportunities for misinformation about the process of our elections, we can assure you we have the utmost confidence in the security and integrity of our elections, and you should too. When you have questions, turn to elections officials as trusted voices as they administer elections.

Trump did not provide any evidence to support his false claim that 2.7 million votes were deleted by Dominion Software, but he did tag Channel Rion and One American News Network (OAN), a far-right web publisher that recently reported on these unsubstantiated claims.

The OAN segment (which was archived by Mediate) claimed that an “unaudited analysis of data obtained from Edison Research” found that Dominion Voting Systems “switched as many as 435,000 votes from President Trump to Joe Biden” and that “another 2.7 million Trump votes appear to have been deleted by Dominion.”

Edison Research President Larry Rosin, however, disputed these claims. In a statement to the The Dispatch Fact Check, Rosin said: “Edison Research created no such report and we are not aware of any voter fraud.”

A spokesperson for Dominion Voting Systems issued a similar statement to the Denver Post: “Dominion Voting Systems categorically denies any claims about any vote switching or alleged software issues with our voting systems. Our systems continue to reliably and accurately count ballots, and state and local election authorities have publicly confirmed the integrity of the process.”

In the aftermath of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, many online spoke up to support current President Donald Trump, including groups of truckers. Members of the private Facebook group, Stop the Tires 2020, called for a nationwide truckers’ shutdown to protest — among other things — Biden’s environmental policies that will include a transition to renewable energy sources.

The group — which as of the time of writing had grown to more than 68,000 members since its founding on Nov. 6, 2020 — planned a strike for Nov. 11, 2020, Veterans Day, and if that was ineffective, would continue the strike from Nov. 26 to 29, 2020, during the Thanksgiving holidays.  According to a post from one of the group’s administrators:

Tiktok videos of individuals stating they were truckers and describing their plans to strike on the aforementioned dates also went viral:

Snopes readers asked us if such strikes were indeed taking place, and if they would impact the delivery of basic food and necessities. We learned that a number of truckers claimed to have participated in the Veterans Day strike. But the actual effectiveness of the past strikes as well as the upcoming ones are yet to be determined.

Before looking at the nature and effectiveness of these strikes we had to determine whether nationwide and industry-wide strikes were even likely for U.S.-based truckers. The answer is complicated. A report from Business Insider looked at laws from the administration of President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s that resulted in a decline in wages, and the eventual decline in union membership in the trucking industry. Deregulation laws were justified because they reportedly saved consumers money, but at the cost of truckers’ wages and working conditions. Hourly wages for heavy and trailer-truck drivers have steadily gone down since then.

Unions also lost much of their power and membership. A few decades ago, large numbers of truckers were unionized and carried out successful strikes in the ’70s. The Teamsters, a labor union that once boasted more than 2 million truckers as members, now has around 75,000 members. And with more independent truckers and companies it is considered extremely challenging to wrangle that many truckers together, because they have neither the time nor resources. Case in point, in April 2019:  Tens of thousands of truck drivers planned a work stoppage in a much-hyped “Black Smoke Matters” protest, but ultimately only a smattering of people in different locations participated.

On Nov. 11, and even after that date had passed, dozens of members of Stop the Tires 2020 posted pictures on the private group claiming they were participating in a strike by refusing to drive. Some of their posts are below:

But there was little evidence that these stoppages had any impact. WWJ Newsradio 950, Detroit’s local station, reported on Nov. 11, “So far, the call for a one-day strike seems to be all talk, as the trucking industry is humming along.” Truckers the station interviewed were not participating, but stated that the strikers’ concerns made sense, and should be taken seriously:

Larry Fuentes, the manager of a large logistics company in metro Detroit told WWJ his truckers have not joined it, but “I can have some understanding of what they’re coming for. Their livelihoods are at stake.” He added that a strike would devastate the industry.

Samuel Ford, a truck driver from Brownstown, Mich., added that he hasn’t joined it, but the drivers in the strike group have a point. “Truckers are very often overlooked … But they do have a very significant say-so over how this country is run,” he said.

Not all truckers are part of these particular anti-Biden strikes. After the election results were announced on Nov. 7, 2020, the American Trucking Associations released a statement congratulating Biden and calling for more infrastructure investment.

Other groups that claimed to strike said they were not defending any one political party, but wanted to improve their working conditions and wages. Over the summer truckers also organized to protest decreased freight rates and working conditions during the pandemic.

Indeed, before the elections, the truckers running the supply chain for United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) that supplies Whole Foods and other grocery stores in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut threatened to strike over what they said was UNFI’s failure to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. The truckers, represented by Teamsters, along with workers at distribution centers in California, said the company was not providing workers with adequate protective equipment, including face masks, and disinfecting and cleaning workspaces. But they reached an agreement with the company by early November.

Since, as of this writing, the strikes planned for late-November are yet to happen, their effectiveness is still to be determined. We will keep an eye on the events and post an update once we have more information.

当美国政客在社交媒体上传播时,谁负责?

众所周知,总统政府之间的过渡期很敏感。这一个已经混乱了。

【原文】

The ongoing chaos in the aftermath of the November 2020 presidential election has no precedent in modern U.S. history.

Against the grim backdrop of skyrocketing coronavirus cases, outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump has let loose a barrage of tweets throughout the days and nights following the election, promoting a baseless conspiracy theory that the race was rigged against him by a nationwide voter fraud scheme.

To be clear, there was no such scheme. Trump’s Democratic political rival, President-elect Joe Biden, won decisively in both ballots and electoral college votes. And Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security released a statement describing the November 2020 election as “the most secure in American history.”

Nevertheless, Trump has as of Nov. 13, 2020, refused to acknowledge the reality of his electoral loss and has pumped out disinformation on Twitter, refusing to concede while executive branch agencies have failed to cooperated with Biden’s transition team.

The chaos has been compounded by public officials’ actions and use of social media to spread disinformation, putting the platforms’ election integrity policies under the microscope.

Daniel Kreiss, director of media and communication at the University of North Carolina, told us that focusing criticism of disinformation on the social media platforms appears non-partisan, making it easier for journalists to point to. But noting Trump’s failure to concede defeat, and the near-unity in Republican legislators endorsing the lie that mass-scale voter fraud took place and failing to acknowledge Biden as president-elect, Kreiss said the problem originates upstream from the platforms.

“The GOP has generally failed to embrace the legitimacy of the president-elect and have been willing to float questions about voter fraud — it’s all over the place, coming from GOP party elites themselves,” Kreiss said. “It’s my opinion that Facebook and Twitter are downstream from this much greater political crisis. At the end of the day, if [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell refuses to come out and say Joe Biden is the president-elect, and the election was free and fair, there’s nothing Facebook and Twitter can do about it.”

We contacted McConnell’s office with questions about why Republicans have largely failed to acknowledge Biden as president-elect, despite Trump’s own administration stating that the 2020 election was secure. We didn’t get a response in time for publication.

Julia Hellwege, associate professor of political science at the University of South Dakota, told us in a phone interview that she is concerned with the chipping away of norms and traditions that many in the U.S. have taken for granted for decades, but which buttress crucial aspects of democracy like the peaceful transfer of power.

“Under normal circumstances there would be a loser and a concession speech and we move on with our lives, not because they are written in to our Constitution, but because they are norms that are part of American and democratic values,” Hellwege said. “When we don’t see this and instead we get uncertainty, that to me signals an erosion of these norms and values.”

That erosion, Hellwege said, is dangerous.

“We haven’t seen it in this country, but we have seen it in other countries,” Hellwege added. “It’s often what we see in countries that descend away from democratic systems. It’s those small things that are the first to go — democracy chips away slowly.”

It’s not just norms like concession speeches that got chipped away in 2020. Aside from driving the “voter fraud” disinformation campaign, Trump’s White House has refused to cooperate with Biden’s transition. Until now, a federal agency called the General Services Administration was unknown to many Americans. But it shot into the public consciousness when its administrator, Trump appointee Emily Murphy, refused to sign a letter of ascertainment that would allow the Biden team access to administration personnel and millions of dollars in funds to begin the transition process.

With coronavirus cases raging, Murphy’s refusal to perform what was up until now an unremarkable bureaucratic task raised fears that her actions could hamper the incoming administration’s efforts to deal with the ongoing public health crisis and endanger national security.

“We are in the midst of the first presidential transition in the modern era to be conducted remotely. We are already facing pretty significant challenges, not just with the coronavirus pandemic, but with the fact that transitions in government are known to be periods of time when the threats of attacks from foreign actors are heightened,” said Donald Sherman, deputy director of the government watchdog non-profit Citizens for Ethics in Washington. “It’s critically important for the national security apparatuses of the outgoing and incoming administrations to be working together in concert and communicating to ensure our national security infrastructure can make the decisions that need to be made and the president can make the decisions that need to be made on day one.”

The Trump administration’s actions in this regard are “wildly irresponsible,” Sherman said, and what Murphy is doing is “reckless.”

We reached out to the General Services Administration to ask what the reason was for the delay in allowing Biden’s transition team access to funds and personnel, and a timeline for when that access would be granted. We received no response in time for publication.

One week after all major news organizations declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, only a smattering of Congressional Republicans have publicly acknowledged the former vice president’s victory over incumbent President Donald Trump.

According to new research by Snopes, just 13 out of 253 GOP members of the outgoing U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives (the 116th Congress) have made a public statement accepting Biden’s victory, referring to him as the president-elect, or congratulating him and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Only 5% of national Republican lawmakers have publicly acknowledged Biden’s victory, despite the Democrat’s garnering 306 electoral college votes — the same total as Trump in 2016, and one that the outgoing president frequently referred to as a “landslide” — and that represents an extraordinary departure from American political conventions.

As Trump and his allies continue to make unsubstantiated and often easily debunked allegations of substantive and consequential electoral fraud, and in the continued absence of a concession by the outgoing president, the vast majority of Congressional Republicans appear unwilling to break ranks by congratulating Biden.

And in Pennsylvania, they stopped it and they’re bringing in all these extra ballots and in Michigan and other states, where they’re back-dating them. So those are all concerns that we have… If there are legitimate claims of fraudulent voting, I would think President-elect Joe Biden would want to get that aired, too, because he’ll go into his presidency untainted.”

This must be cured….I believe there needs to be a top-down investigation of the way this election was conducted in Georgia and in the other states where ballots have been randomly appearing in just the right numbers to swing elections.

Every legal vote should be counted, and fraudulent votes should be discarded.”

For the good of our nation, the goal must be to count every legal vote and invalidate every illegally cast vote. President Donald J. Trump
and his team have every right to pursue recounts, investigate possible systematic fraud, and utilize the court system to ensure a fair and accurate count. The process may take weeks, so let’s try to be patient and get this right.”

  • Rep. Rob Gibbs, R-Ohio 7.  Nov. 6.  “It should not be controversial to demand every legal vote be counted and every illegal vote discarded. It doesn’t matter the state, precinct, or political party. If there are legitimate accusations of irregularities, it is incumbent on the proper authorities to investigate them. This was clearly a much closer election than Democrats and their allies in the mainstream media wanted to admit. Faith in our electoral process is paramount to the success of our Republic. But there are still votes being counted.  In this close election, President Trump has every right to insist that all legally cast ballots are counted.  He also has the right to appropriate recounts and the right to go to court to resolve any questions about irregularities. At the same time, the Trump campaign has an obligation to come forward with evidence to support any allegations of election fraud.”
  • Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio 15.  Nov. 6.  “We must count every vote that was legally cast. And we must accept the results.  If there is proof of fraud or illegal activity in this election, it should be taken to the prosecutors, the courts, and the public immediately. However, baseless allegations undermine the public’s confidence in our electoral system which is the foundation of our Republic.”

  • Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla. 1.  Nov. 6.  “Every legal vote must be counted. I know many of my constituents are concerned with what’s happening in states like Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, and Georgia. Our country has held elections for over 200 years. The process works, but only if it’s done legally. Members of my team have been on the ground in Pennsylvania this week, working to ensure that every legal vote is counted. I have been in contact with my colleagues in these battleground states and I send my full support to them.”
  • Sen. Jim Inhofe, R.  Nov. 10.  According to Public Radio Tulsa, Inhofe said the presidential election was “not a done deal.” An audio recording shows that, when asked about the existence of evidence to support Trump’s fraud claims, Inhofe replied: “We’re not supposed to know that yet. I don’t know that yet, and I’m not sure that the president knows that. But he has the investigation going on, and he has a lot of reasons for believing that there is fraud. So, I would say to anyone there from the press that has questions about that, you just have to wait just a short period of time until he comes out and says what — as I mentioned — what fraud is out there, would that have impacted three states in such a way that he should not have lost the election.”
  • Sen. James Lankford, R.  Nov. 11.  “At the end of the day whether you’re Republican or Democrat, Independent whoever it may be, if you’re just an American you should want an open process, that at the end of it  everyone can say every question was answered and was resolved.”

While the Presidential race remains extremely close in some states, I am confident in the U.S. election system – a system that provides mechanisms in every state for requesting a recount or raising other concerns related to official results. If anyone has evidence of suspicious activity that threatens the integrity of free and fair elections, they can and should make the appropriate officials aware or challenge the issue in court.”
  • Rep. Frank Lucas R-Okla. 3.  Nov. 6.  “As America awaits the certification of election results, we must have faith in our voting process. All legal ballots cast will be counted under authority of state laws, and if irregularities are alleged, they will be resolved in the courts- as is legally appropriate. But, at the end of the day, we all must respect the outcome of our elections. The American people must have confidence in our government and trust the American electoral system.”

A final outcome will be reached when the election process concludes, which is after all legal votes have been counted, litigation is resolved, and any recounts are completed. Democracy succeeds only when all sides can trust that the election process is fair and transparent. Given the extremely close result, the American people must be assured that the process is being conducted with integrity. More than 150 million Americans voted last week, and they deserve to have confidence in the outcome. This means that, at the very least, the President and his legal team should be given every opportunity to fully investigate reports of voting irregularities and fraud, and any issues they find should be heard in the appropriate court of law. So to those of you who think President Trump should just pack up and go home, that is not going to happen. I encourage you to let the process play out before rushing to judgment. Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

In the days following the 2020 U.S. presidential election, some social media users posted baseless claims that a whopping 132,000 ballots cast in Georgia’s Fulton County were “highly likely” to be tossed out due to an unspecified issue stemming from changes of address. Here is one example of a post containing the claim:

The tweet above was taken from another tweet posted by Richard Baris, director of Big Data Polling. But Baris told us that his commentary was taken out of context by various websites and other social media users, including the Gateway Pundit junk site.

Baris told us that he never said 132,000 ballots were likely to be tossed out. He said that while researching voter files in Georgia, he noted there were 132,000 flags indicating that people had moved.

“A change of address flag means someone reported they have a forwardable address, yet they are on the voter rolls still,” Baris told us by phone. “I’m a big critic of that, we should clean this up.” However, he added, “having a change of address flag doesn’t mean someone voted illegally.”

Baris stated his tweeted rocketed around social media, but no one bothered asking him what he meant by it before taking it out of context.

“Unfortunately what usually gets around is what people think they thought you meant,” Baris said, adding he would have appreciated, “An email, or a phone call just to say, ‘Hey, what did you mean by this?'”

According to Fulton County, a total of 522,050 ballots were cast there in the November 2020 general election; 132,000 ballots being disqualified would be roughly a quarter of the total ballots cast. Such a large number and proportion of ballots tossed out in the county that includes Atlanta would most likely be the source of major news stories and public statements from election officials there. As of this writing, there have been none of those.

Georgia flipped in 2020, with the majority of votes in 2020 going to Trump’s political rival, Democratic President-elect Joe Biden. As of this writing, Biden carried the state by more than 12,000 votes. Trump’s team has requested a recount.

Posts claiming that 132,000 ballots from Fulton County are to be rendered ineligible from the state’s total vote count appeared to be based on a statement that was then taken out of context, and used incorrectly. We therefore rate this claim “False.”

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

A video showing election workers collecting ballots from a drop box was widely circulated on social media in the days following Election Day, Nov. 3, 2020, along with claims that it showed some sort of nefarious activity. One posting, for instance, was accompanied by the text: “I thought there was no evidence mail in voting was prone to fraud?” Another posting was shared with the claim that “Nicaragua and Senegal could do a better job at compromising the people’s trust in the electoral system. RIP USA.”

On Nov. 11, 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump shared the video to social media, writing: “You are looking at BALLOTS! Is this what our Country has come to?”

This video does show election workers collecting ballots. However, this video was not taken on Nov. 11, and any insinuations that this video documents illegal or fraudulent activity are false.

This video was taken on Nov. 4, 2020, in Los Angeles, California, and shows election workers collecting ballots that were delivered to a drop box the night before. This is in line with California law.

California, like many states, accepts mail-in ballots as long as they are postmarked on or before Election Day. California residents can deliver mail-in ballots via a drop box, as shown in the above-displayed video, up until “the close of polls at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.”

Mike Sanchez, a spokesman for the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) told Reuters:

“[These] are valid ballots and will be processed and counted in our Official Election Canvass … All vote by mail ballot drop boxes were closed and locked at 8 PM on Election Day. Ballots from all boxes throughout the County were picked up the following day.”

While this viral video does not show the illegal collection of ballots (this video actually shows election workers picking up mail-in ballots that were delivered to a drop box the night prior), it does show ballots being collected after news outlets called the race in California. But, again, that is not indicative of fraud or illegal activity.

The Associated Press explains that it called the race in California as soon as polls closed because data from early voting statistics confirmed that the longstanding blue state would remain blue in 2020.

The Associated Press wrote:

The AP declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner of California as soon as polls closed in the state, even though election officials there had yet to release any results from Tuesday’s presidential contest.

The news agency did so after results from AP VoteCast and an analysis of early voting statistics confirmed expectations that the state’s longstanding political trend in favor of Democratic presidential candidates will hold.

VoteCast, the AP’s wide-ranging survey of the American electorate, captures voters’ choices and why they made them.

Hillary Clinton beat Trump in California by 30 percentage points in 2016, and a Republican presidential candidate hasn’t carried the state since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

California is the most populous state in the U.S. and its 55 electoral votes make it the biggest Election Day prize.

The Associated Press’ projection certainly proved accurate. As of this writing, a week after Election Day, Joe Biden is leading in the state with 10,268,890 votes (or 64.3%), compared to Trump’s 5,368,263 votes (33.6%).

In the final months of 2020, scientists around the world raced to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus, which at that point had reached more than 50 million cases and resulted in the deaths of at least 1.2 million people.

On Nov. 9, the biopharmaceutical company Pfizer announced in a news release — not a peer-reviewed journal —that interim results testing the efficacy of vaccine candidate BNT162b2 showed a 90% success rate in protecting against COVID-19 infection, making it one of the first and most promising immunization potentials to date.

And politicians were quick to weigh in. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said in a tweet that the public-private partnership between U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and Pfizer led to the success of the vaccine:

HUGE NEWS: Thanks to the public-private partnership forged by President @realDonaldTrump, @pfizer announced its Coronavirus Vaccine trial is EFFECTIVE, preventing infection in 90% of its volunteers.

— Mike Pence (@Mike_Pence) November 9, 2020

Then there is the logistical challenge of manufacturing and distributing vaccines globally. First doses must be prioritized for health care workers and vulnerable populations. And a logistical challenge lies in manufacturing and rolling out a vaccine that needs to be stored and maintained at very low temperatures (-94 to -112 degrees Fahrenheit).

As the world waits, experts warn that the promise of a vaccine cannot allow the findings to “seed complacency” and cause people to shy away from public health guidance. On the cusp of the vaccine candidate announcement, most nations in the world saw massive upticks in new coronavirus cases reported each day in October and November, according to data published by Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. On Nov. 4, 5, and 6, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported over 100,000 new coronavirus cases each day

What Happens Next?

Pfizer said that the company plans to file an emergency use authorization (EUA) of the two-dose vaccine with the FDA later in November. At that point, researchers will have collected two months of safety data required to use the drug in some cases. However, that does not constitute full approval of the drug. At the time of this writing, just 94 of the nearly 44,000 trial participants had contracted COVID-19 and the study is expected to continue until at least 164 people test positive.

Though the long-term safety and efficacy data remains to be seen, it is estimated that the manufacturers could produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021 to be distributed on an as-needed basis if a EUA is granted.

The Pfizer study is estimated to be completed by Dec. 11, 2022.

圣诞节什么时候被取消:历史的教训

没有大规模庆祝活动的圣诞节的前景正在人们的脑海中掠夺。

The prospect of a Christmas without large-scale celebrations is preying on minds. After the widespread cancellation of pantomimes, festive light “switch-ons” and other community activities, it seems likely that 2020’s festivities will be much more intimate affairs, potentially with households banned from mixing indoors.

But what if families ignore distancing rules, should they remain in place, and celebrate together rather than on Zoom? Politicians seeking to come down hard on rule-breakers might wish to recall a previously restricted yuletide.

Successively in 1647 and 1648, parties led to riots, these riots led to rebellions, which, in turn, caused the Second Civil War that summer. King Charles was put on trial after his defeat in the war and was executed. This resulted in a revolution and Britain and Ireland became a republic – all because of Christmas.

This Christmas, police across the country are ready to enforce COVID regulations and break up gatherings. While the pandemic does make things different, with rule breaking a matter of safety as much as anything else, politicians could learn from the fallout of the last time Christmas was cancelled.

Like in 1647, many people today are fed up with the government’s restrictions. Many have also suffered financial difficulties as a result of the COVID regulations. Some may rail against the idea of ending a miserable year under what they may regard as contradictory restrictions on family fun.

Such a situation will have to be handled gingerly. There has already been civil disorder over lockdowns. Vaccines are apparently coming in the new year but the last thing the country needs is further unrest. Once again, government will need to balance the health risk against other societal challenges this pandemic has presented. The Conversation

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

When Democratic U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris was elected to the position of vice president of the United States on Nov. 7, 2020, her past stances and policies received additional scrutiny, particularly from conservative media outlets. An excerpt from one particular interview with The Root in February 2019 was picked apart by a conservative Christian YouTube channel, For Such A Time As This, and shared during the election season to support claims that Harris supported the legalization of prostitution.

Snopes readers shared with us the following video from March 2019, which shows the host, James Pittman, criticizing Harris for her comments in her interview with The Root. Many readers asked whether it was true that Harris was in favor of legalizing prostitution. We learned that the answer is complicated.

However, Pittman’s analysis misrepresents Harris’ stance on sex work. Pittman claims that by “legalizing” prostitution Harris is imagining an “industry of prostitutes” where people would “not get harmed,” when the act of prostitution itself, he says, is inherently “harming women.”

But what did Harris actually say in her interview? Below is a partial transcript of the conversation with reporter Terrell Jermaine Starr:

Starr: Do you think that sex work ought to be decriminalized?

Harris: I think so, I do. I think that we have to understand though that it is not as simple as that, it is also about and there is an ecosystem around that that includes crimes that harm people and for those issues I do not believe that anybody who hurts another human being or profits off of their exploitation should be admonished or should be free of criminal prosecution. But when you’re talking about consenting adults I think that […] yes we should really consider that we can’t criminalize consensual behavior as long as no one is being harmed. But at the point that anyone’s being harmed or exploited then I think we have to understand that’s a different matter.

Harris was talking about the decriminalization of sex work and not its legalization. Decriminalization means that carrying out an act or behavior will no longer land that person with a jail sentence or criminal record. Legalization, on the other hand, is the process of removing all legal prohibitions to that act or behavior.

In the same interview, she addressed her work as the San Francisco district attorney: “I was advocating then that we have to stop arresting these prostitutes, and instead go after the johns and the pimps […] we were criminalizing the women, but not the men who associated with it, who were making money off of it or profiting off of it.”

She appeared to be propagating what analysts describe as the Nordic model of partially decriminalizing sex work, which criminalizes the buyers of sex and not those who sell it. The intention of such a policy is to cut demand for prostitution by targeting buyers of what many say is an inherently violent and cruel trade. But the results of adopting this model have been mixed around the world, and critics argue that it does not take into account the rights of workers who go into this trade by choice.

Harris’ 2019 comments were a drastic shift from her past actions. Back in 2008 when she was district attorney, she was a vocal opponent of Proposition K, a ballot measure intended to decriminalize prostitution in San Francisco. She called the effort “completely ridiculous” and said, “It would put a welcome mat out for pimps and prostitutes to come on into San Francisco.” Back then she argued that it would expose prostitutes to drugs, guns, and sexual crimes. But supporters of the measure, including sex workers, argued that Prop K would allow them to organize, negotiate for better wages and working conditions, as well as make their occupation safer and more legitimate.

As California’s attorney general, Harris was also instrumental in curbing websites that hosted classified ads for sexual services like Backpage.com, in an effort to tackle child trafficking. By 2017, the website’s adult section was removed but a New York Times report found that this had done little to address the problem of trafficking on the site. In her 2019 interview with The Root, right before her comments on decriminalizing sex work, she doubled down on her actions against the site:

Backpage was providing advertisement for the sale of children, of minors. And, unlike Craigslist, which said we’re going to stop doing it, the people who were running Backpage basically thumbed their nose at us and kept doing it, making money off of the sale of youth, and so I called for them to be shut down. And I have no regrets about that. Now, on the issue of providing a safe place for sex workers — I am a huge advocate for that, always have been.

In 2017 and 2018, as a senator, she supported anti-sex trafficking legislation meant to protect victims of sex trafficking online which also targeted Backpage.com. But anti-trafficking advocates and sex workers said the legislation would exacerbate the problem because it did not distinguish between those who were trafficking victims and those who were legitimate sex workers. Advocates said this would hurt their efforts to help people within the sex trade who were being trafficked. Sex workers argued that this would also harm their source of income and force them to rely on less safe forums to advertise and conduct their services. Indeed, according to The Appeal, the crackdown did make sex workers more vulnerable and marginalized.

Like many politicians, Harris’ views have changed over time, but many remain mistrustful of this about-face given her track record. Considering that she appears to be advocating for partial decriminalization, the details of how she would go about this are yet to be determined, and her original comments were misrepresented, we rate this claim a “Mixture.”

On Nov. 11, 2020, the YouTube video streaming website experienced an outage. It was not clear how widespread the outage was, nor was it clear if it impacted all devices playing YouTube videos. YouTube TV, a subscription television streaming service, was also down.

Initially, the @TeamYouTube Twitter account confirmed that YouTube was down, and that they are “aware of the issue and working on a fix.”

If you’re having trouble watching videos on YouTube right now, you’re not alone – our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. We’ll follow up here with any updates.

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

On Nov. 9, 2020, Rudy Giuliani, personal attorney to U.S. President Donald Trump, tweeted about the purported media refusal to cover lawsuits he and other presidential allies had filed in an attempt to sow doubt about, or overturn the results of, the 2020 presidential election. In that tweet, he asserted that media company Real Clear Politics had called the state of Pennsylvania for U.S. President-Elect Joe Biden, but had taken that call back following the specter of a lawsuit that would, in Giuliani’s words, “invalidate 300,000 or more crooked democrat votes votes in Philly.”

Former Trump Administration Press Secretary Sean Spicer also made this claim. In fact, as both archived views of RealClear’s elections results page and their Editor-in-Chief Tom Bevan made clear, the site never called Pennsylvania for Biden in the first place, making the claim of a recent switch to a “toss up” therefore indefensible.

As for the lawsuit, the invalidation of 300,000 votes is a fantasy based on a long-shot legal play. While the Trump campaign has filed several lawsuits in the state, the most recent effort at the time of this writing is an effort to prohibit the state from “Certifying the results of the General election,” or, in the alternative, preventing them “from certifying any results from the General Election that included the tabulation of absentee and mail in ballots which do not comply with the Election Code.” The potential violation of election code laws referenced relies on a largely unsubstantiated list of complaints about fairness in poll watching and ballot curing. That case is currently pending.

Because Real Clear Politics never called Pennsylvania for Biden, the claim that it switched its call after news of the Trump campaign’s legal actions is therefore false.

A tweet from former Lehigh County Commissioner Dean Browning led a handful of Twitter users to do a double-take. Earlier in 2020, Browning lost the Republican primary race for U.S. House Pennsylvania District 7. He described himself in his Twitter bio as: “A proud pro-life & pro-2A Christian conservative dedicated to enacting common sense solutions to Keep America Great.”

On Nov. 10, 2020, someone — presumably Browning — controlling his verified Twitter account tweeted: “I’m a black gay guy and I can personally say that Obama did nothing for me, my life only changed a little bit and it was for the worse. Everything is so much better under Trump though. I feel respected – which I never do when democrats are involved.”

The tweet came in response to another Twitter user who responded to one of Browning’s pinned tweets. Twitter users speculated that the “black gay guy” tweet was apparently to be meant to be issued from an alternate account controlled by Browning under the pretense of being a gay black man who supports U.S. President Donald Trump.

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

Less than one week after polls closed in the 2020 presidential election, U.S. President-elect Joe Biden began discussing health care and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic at news conferences. Photos and videos of the highly publicized events in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, showed him on stages decorated with posters reading, “Office of the President Elect.”

Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and their allies promoted the briefings and a website titled “buildbackbetter.com” as evidence of their work preparing for the White House before Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, 2021.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters refused to acknowledge such efforts and blocked government officials from cooperating with the Biden-Harris team.

Trump and his inner circle spewed misinformation in an attempt to convince Americans the country’s constitutionally mandated elections process — which requires a group of electors to officially cast votes for president after Election Day — provided Trump the time to use court systems or other means to defy the popular vote. (We explain the Electoral College and the process for certifying election results after news media declare winners in presidential races here.)

We reached out to the Presidential Transitional Center, a nonprofit that brings together politicians from both political parties to develop best practices for presidential transitions, which provided us the following analysis:

During the period between Election Day and the inauguration, presidents-elect must shift from campaigning to governing. As our analysis reveals, this traditionally entails a mix of activities that include personnel announcements, policy development, and stakeholder, media and public engagement.

At least one federal document obtained by Snopes — a memorandum of understanding between the General Services Administration (GSA), an executive branch agency that oversees presidential transitions, and Biden’s team — said the “Office of President Elect” was synonymous with efforts by “President Elect [Biden] and Vice President-elect [Harris].”

Yet no federal law establishes “the Office of the President Elect” as a formal section of government. Rather, federal agencies appear to accept the office as an informal title for teams working on behalf of presidents-elect (as shown via the above-displayed document), carrying out efforts under the 1963 Presidential Transition Act. That congressional package outlines steps for the GSA to green light millions of federal dollars to the president-elect’s transition team to set up operations.

In an email to Snopes, researchers with the Presidential Transitional Center wrote:

[There] is no formal office of the president-elect, however president-elect support is traditionally its own office within the larger transition team. This office coordinates the president-elect’s schedule and travel, including communications, press engagements, and the like.

In other words, initiatives promoted by Biden and Harris under the title of “Office of the President Elect” were part of a larger effort by their transition team to prepare for their new jobs, not a nefarious conspiracy to undermine Trump.

Additionally, the researchers told Snopes buildbackbetter.com would turn into a government-run website if, or when, the administrator of the GSA, a Trump appointee, ascertained the “apparent successful candidate” — or formally recognized Biden as the election’s winner. That had not happened as of this writing, and the agency did not explain why that was the case.

The administrative delay dragged on as the Trump campaign banked on several lawsuits alleging schemes to undermine ballot casting or counting and attempted to energize his loyal supporters. A  team comprised of Trump senior officials and campaign aids told journalists those lawsuits were less about winning arguments over specific voter tallies and more about forestalling “a loss he can’t quite grasp,” per The Associated Press

In sum, considering the visual evidence of Trump addressing the country using the title “Office of the President Elect,” as well as acknowledgment from researchers of presidential transitions that the office informally represents work by transition teams, we rate this claim “False.”

辉瑞疫苗:“疗效率超过 90%” 真正意味着什么

功效、有效性 — 有什么区别?

There was – rightfully – a lot of excitement when Pfizer and BioNTech announced interim results from their COVID vaccine trial. The vaccine, called BNT162b2, was reported to have an “efficacy rate above 90%”. This was soon translated in the press to be 90% “effective” at preventing COVID-19. Efficacy, effectiveness – what’s the difference?

We academics are very precise in our language and it can be a cause of considerable frustration when the media doesn’t appreciate the important distinction between certain terms. I was recently asked not to use the term “efficacy” for my radio interview because “listeners won’t understand what it means”. Sometimes accuracy can get in the way of clarity, so it’s important to know when to let these things go. However, now is perhaps the time to draw a clear distinction between efficacy and effectiveness.

Important parameters include vaccine performance for different groups (age, ethnic background, other conditions), duration of protection (duration of immunity and effectiveness against evolving virus strains), the balance of benefit against harms. Cost effectiveness is also an ongoing consideration, based on comparisons with other vaccine and treatment options.

We don’t know what the overall effectiveness of the vaccine will be in preventing COVID-19 symptoms, severe disease or deaths, and it may be several years before studies report on the effectiveness of BNT162b2 for different groups. However, it is unlikely that it will be 90%.

But then very few vaccines – aside from measles and chickenpox – are 90% effective. The flu vaccine is around 40%-60% effective, but it still saves millions of lives. And that’s something to celebrate. The Conversation

Rupert Murdoch is famous for always wanting to back a winner. So, amid the frenzied atmosphere of the vote count, when his Fox News network started to refer to Donald Trump’s “unfounded fraud claims” with regard to the election, it was clear his chances of retaining the presidency were diminishing by the minute.

The network doubled down on this more recently when presenter Neil Cavuto cut away from a statement by White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, exclaiming: “Whoa, whoa, whoa – I just think we have to be very clear. She’s charging the other side as welcoming fraud and welcoming illegal voting. Unless she has more details to back that up, I can’t in good countenance continue to show you this.”

This extends to the coronavirus pandemic, in which parts of the network have served as platform for Trump to spread misinformation regarding the dangers posed by a virus that has killed more than 230,000 Americans. Some of its coverage has even come in for criticism from Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who has advised six US presidents.

This may even have helped create a less informed public – the very antithesis of the First Amendment’s vision of an “informed populace”. A 2012 study found that Fox News viewers were less informed even than those who watched no news at all.

Misinforming, or not taking enough care properly to inform the public, undermines the objective of press freedom and represents a disturbing subversion of First Amendment principles.

That parts of Fox News have been willing to challenge Trump in recent days may provide hope that, in a moment of existential importance for the country, some journalists at the network are taking their First Amendment obligations seriously. The Conversation

In late January 2018, reports surfaced that supporters of Donald Trump confronted a Native American legislator during an anti-immigration protest at the Arizona state capitol, demanding to know whether he was in the country legally. The viral stories on various web sites (including The Hill and the liberal RawStory.com) were all aggregated from the original reporting of the Arizona Capitol Times, a nonpartisan weekly newspaper focused on Arizona government and state politics.

We confirmed that one of the anti-immigration protesters did indeed ask an indigenous state representative whether or not he was “legal,” both through video footage of the incident and three corroborating interviews with Arizona state legislators who witnessed the scene. In the background of the following video, a protester asks Rep. Eric Descheenie whether he is “legal.” Descheenie is Navajo. Rep. Pamela Powers Hannley filmed the exchange:

The incident occurred during a chaotic, five-hour long demonstration on 25 January 2018 at the Arizona capitol building where roughly a dozen anti-immigration activists turned out to protest the social justice lobbying group Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA) — though the group was there to advocate for pro-labor legislation, not immigration. Protesters alleged that LUCHA was “trying to advance social, racial and economic justice for DACA recipients, illegal aliens and their illegal families.” According to state lawmakers who were at the scene, the protesters were visibly armed.

Several state lawmakers and staff reported that the protesters singled out non-white people and accused them of being in the country “illegally.”

We contacted protester Jennifer Caminiti-Harrison, who appears in the foreground of the video above, for comment. She told us on 1 February 2018 that a media representative was handling her communications, but no representative has responded to our query:

We are working on a statement now. […]

Please do not release the story without the statement or you’ll need to retract your story once you see the full video.

At another point, they approach a dark-haired woman demanding to know if she’s a legislator and when she doesn’t answer, they question whether it’s because she doesn’t speak English.

Descheenie told us he was walking out of the capitol for lunch at a nearby farmer’s market with fellow Arizona state lawmaker Rep. Wenona Benally (D-Window Rock) when he saw protesters “hounding” a group of children and Hannley. In a phone interview, Descheenie told us:

We could see [Rep. Powers Hannley] walking in our direction. I distinctly remember seeing her face. and I’ll never forget it. She had this look of terror and frustration. She was getting hounded by three of the protesters. I heard her acknowledge they were harassing children and you could see it happening. [Benally and I] in an effort to mitigate the intimidation and harassing, we began to absorb it. My intent was to get them off Pamela Hannley and get them to quiet down, have a constructive dialogue.

The one person I was speaking with primarily, she obliged. The other two did not. They continued to harass Rep. Hannley. I turned to one and asked her to calm down, lower her voice. She asked me if I was legal. I’m not going to tolerate a question like that given the history of indigenous people in this country. These are our aboriginal lands and I don’t need someone asking me about my legal status. It speaks for itself. I told her not to ask me that question.

Hannley told us she also encountered the protesters when she was going to the farmer’s market for lunch and saw them yelling at a group of children. When she tried to intervene, they surrounded her:

I went out to lunch and I saw them harassing this group of about 12 children aged maybe 8, 9, 10 years old. They were obviously on a school trip. I don’t know if they were Latino children or Native American but they definitely had brown skin, and these people started screaming, “You’re illegal, go home.” They were walking down the sidewalk with them screaming at them.

When they came back around I said that what they were doing was inappropriate. I don’t know how many groups of school children these people harassed. I know of at lest three representatives who tried to intervene [in similar incidents] and they got harassed. They surrounded me and started screaming things like, “Do you support people smuggling children into the U.S.?” And then representatives Descheenie and Benally walked up and they started screaming at them.

Rep. Hannley provided a second video showing the group yelling at schoolchildren as a man yells at them to “get away from those children”:

Benally told us that even after the three legislators ended the conversation and broke away from the confrontation with the help of a capitol security guard, the protesters continued to follow them and yell at them. The encounter was so hostile that Benally said a security guard told the legislators take the back entrance when they returned to the capitol building from lunch.

In the early days following the Nov. 3, 2020, general election, U.S. President Donald Trump and his surrogates undertook an effort to spread disinformation that undermined voter confidence in the democratic process as it became clear that Trump’s political rival Joe Biden would become the president-elect.

When television networks announced that Biden was the projected winner of the presidential race, having amassed the majority of electoral college and popular votes, Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, stood at a podium to hold a news conference in a strip mall parking lot outside Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia.

Giuliani was flanked by a man claiming to be a Philadelphia resident and GOP poll watcher in Pennsylvania who wasn’t allowed to observe ballots being counted — but it turned out that man was Daryl Brooks, who has frequently run unsuccessfully for political office in New Jersey.

The news conference followed a tweet from Trump that appeared to suggest a ritzier, well-known downtown location — namely the luxury Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts.

The chain of events, which many found comical, prompted readers to ask us about it, with many simply wondering if it’s true at all that the news conference was held in a parking lot instead of a fancy name-brand hotel. It is true.

Voting in the 2020 U.S. Election may be over, but the misinformation keeps on ticking. Never stop fact-checking. Follow our post-election coverage here.

In the days after news outlets called the 2020 U.S. presidential election and projected that Joe Biden would be the 46th president of the United States, the internet was flooded with various unfounded claims about voter fraud. One popular rumor concerned something called “Hammer and Scorecard.” While this rumor was wide ranging, it basically held that a “deep state” supercomputer named “Hammer” and a computer program called “Scorecard” were being used to alter vote counts.

We’ll take a closer look at this rumor in the article below. But before we do, we should note that Christopher Krebs, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security — a position he was nominated to in 2018 by U.S. President Donald Trump — has called the “Hammer and Scorecard” rumors “nonsense”:

To be crystal clear on ⬇️, I’m specifically referring to the Hammer and Scorecard nonsense. It’s just that – nonsense. This is not a real thing, don’t fall for it and think 2x before you share. #Protect2020 //t.co/f2FpSbRXKy

Hammer and Scorecard in Action?

The Director of CISA has dismissed the claims about Hammer and Scorecard altering vote counts, and these rumors originate with a man who has a long history of making deceptive claims. Still, social media users quickly found “evidence” that Hammer and Scorecard was real, and that it was truly being used to steal the 2020 election. In November 2020, a video started to circulate on social media that supposedly showed “SCORECARD working in real time.”

The Conservative Daily Post wrote:

In this video, it’s easy to see SCORECARD working in real time.

Hammer and ScoreCard switched 19,958 votes live on TV from Trump to Biden in the Pennsylvania Presidential Race!

At the 00:04 mark, the video shows Trump 1,690,589 and Biden 1,252,537 … then the video cycles through the other ‘crucial’ states of Wisconsin, Arizona and Michigan.

It returns to Pennsylvania at the 00:40 mark, and pay close attention here.

Trump somehow LOST votes, giving his total at 1,670,631, which is a loss of 19,958 votes! At the same time, Biden picks up that EXACT amount, mysteriously gaining to 1,272,495.

The above-displayed video does show a genuine clip from CNN. However, it is not evidence of wrongdoing. In fact, what this video shows isn’t even very unusual. CNN, like most news networks, uses data from the National Election Pool to provide real-time election results during their coverage.

NBC News wrote:

The NEP is a consortium of major news networks — ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC — that pools together resources to gather vote and exit poll data. The NEP works with the consumer research firm Edison Research to collect timely and comprehensive election data on Election Day and in the following days, weeks and months until results are certified by all states. The NEP licenses data to several news outlets, including Reuters and The New York Times, among others.

The above-displayed video shows a momentary error in these real-time results. A source from CNN told us that this video showed a brief moment when the results were incorrectly transposed from the NEP and that this human error was caught, flagged, and quickly fixed (as shown in the video). This video is not evidence of a supercomputer hacking into the U.S. election system and altering vote counts. It’s a video showing a momentary error that was quickly fixed thanks to the numerous safeguards in place to protect the integrity of elections.

CISA Director Kreb’s message about the Hammer and Scorecard rumors bears repeating: “Robust safeguards including canvassing and auditing procedures help ensure the accuracy of official election results,” and that it is not true that a “bad actor could change election results without detection.”

CISA writes:

Reality: Robust safeguards including canvassing and auditing procedures help ensure the accuracy of official election results.

Rumor: A bad actor could change election results without detection.

Get the Facts: The systems and processes used by election officials to tabulate votes and certify official results are protected by various safeguards that help ensure the accuracy of election results. These safeguards include measures that help ensure tabulation systems function as intended, protect against malicious software, and enable the identification and correction of any irregularities.

Every state has voting system safeguards to ensure each ballot cast in the election can be correctly counted. State procedures often include testing and certification of voting systems, required auditable logs, and software checks, such as logic and accuracy tests, to ensure that ballots are properly counted before election results are made official. With these security measures, election officials can check to determine that devices are running the certified software and functioning properly.

Every state also has laws and processes to verify vote tallies before results are officially certified. State processes include robust chain-of-custody procedures, auditable logs, and canvass processes. The vast majority of votes cast in this election will be cast on paper ballots or using machines that produce a paper audit trail, which allow for tabulation audits to be conducted from the paper record in the event any issues emerge with the voting system software, audit logs, or tabulation. These canvass and certification procedures are also generally conducted in the public eye, as political party representatives and other observers are typically allowed to be present, to add an additional layer of verification.

Not long after Joe Biden was declared the winner of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 7, 2020, his wife, Jill Biden, posted a photograph celebrating the victory. Eagle-eyed viewers on the internet zoomed in on the blue baseball cap Biden was sporting, which read “We Just Did” above the number 46, indicating Biden’s new position as the 46th president of the United States.

He will be a President for all of our families. pic.twitter.com/iGPKLMMIcK

— Dr. Jill Biden (@DrBiden) November 7, 2020

But this reported “trolling” by Biden remains unconfirmed. The Biden campaign has not commented on it, and media coverage emphasizes that this is an interpretation from many on the internet, although “We Just Did” was also seen as a “clever exercise in branding.”

Given that neither Biden nor his representatives have addressed the true intentions behind the “We Just Did” slogan on Biden’s hat to date, we rate this claim as “Unproven.”
